We succeeded. But we also failed.
How so? One concert patron said he thought the Conservation Village was great, but he wished he had known it was there beforehand so he could have brought his child.
This is just one example of the changes in minds and attitudes we seek.
If they don't boat, or don't fish, or don't dive or simply don't care that much, this is the wrong concert for them.
South Florida has the opportunity to set a new standard for benefit concerts. We can be the place where the blueprint is re written from simply raising money to changing habits and attitudes.
We just hate to fall short of the higher purpose.

There lies the problem. Despite improvements in pre Nike Mag Elite For Sale
These exhibits stressed solutions. We didn't want to spend two days on a beach dwelling in doom. Instead, we demonstrated in hands on ways how sound science and smart conservation programs can improve the health of our oceans.
So what needs to happen?
Other than Sunday's rains, this year's Tortuga Music Festival was a hit. Big crowds, booked hotel rooms and great performances.
The GHOF and our Conservation Village partners are ready and eager to help Huka and RTO reach this goal. We can get there, especially if the highest profile voices the performers themselves set the tone with their music and their words.
We are grateful to Huka's and RTO's leadership for their support in providing a Conservation Village. We believe they care about the oceans, and making this concert all it ought to be.
If it's unacceptable to toss the beer can out your car window, or over the side of your boat, why is it ok to toss it on the beach?

There was a moment late Saturday afternoon that spoke to the lack of proper messaging.
During one performance, the sandy grounds in front of the Sunrise stage were littered with empty Corona cans. Think of it. This is an ocean conservation concert during turtle nesting season and the people attending it were thoughtless or clueless enough to drop spent beer cans on the sand.
backing, brought dozens of marine science and conservation groups together to "edu tain" concertgoers. Each invested in building an interactive and engaging exhibit including shark tracks, model oyster domes, mock turtle nests, reef satellite maps, sea oat plantings, even a rotation of popular chefs to serve responsible seafood.

Let's start at the beginning. The Tortuga Music Festival was the brainchild of Guy Harvey Inc. president Steve Stock and RTO founder Chris Stacey. They hashed out the original idea at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2011.
In fairness, a few of the performers did voice their support for the cause, but far too few.
Don't get us wrong. We are proud of the work we and our Conservation Village partners have conducted at Tortuga.
Yes, by many measures, it was a success except one. The 2014 Tortuga Music Festival fell short of raising the bar for a benefit concert. To get there, we need the festival's organizers, Rock the Ocean Foundation and Huka Entertainment, to collaboratively work with us and a committee of our Conservation Village partners to achieve even better messaging.
We have a list of ideas, but none would have more impact than for each of the musicians being paid not so small fortunes to voice their commitment to ocean conservation. Many of them fish. Many of them are boaters. They need to speak up.
